SENSOR OFFERS LOWER COST
A new vehicle detection sensor from Banner Engineering is significantly less expensive, easier to install and more dependable to operate than inductive loop systems, the company reports. The M-Gage sensor is offered in two configurations that allow it to be used in a wide variety of applications. It reliably determines the presence of vehicles in drive-through service facilities such as car wash, fast food and retail kiosk; and loading dock and warehousing applications.
The flat M7 style is designed for easy and economical underground installation as well as applications requiring a low profile. It requires only a single 9mm wide saw cut to install, and no re-cuts are needed for replacement, reducing disruption of traffic and roadway damage. In contrast, inductive loop systems require as many as nine saw cuts in a complex geometric pattern for roadway installation or replacement.
The S18 uses a universally accepted 18mm barrel housing that can be easily mounted in many applications. It is particularly attractive in applications where the sensor is mounted inside a conduit where it can be snaked into position and easily removed or replaced by dragging it out.
M-Gage sensors are self-contained compact units that do not need external frequency controller boxes or emitters. They can also be wall mounted to detect vehicles at loading docks and fork lifts passing through automatic overhead doors.
The sensors use patented magneto-resistive technology to measure changes in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by introduction of a large ferromagnetic object. When the degree of magnetic field change reaches the sensor’s threshold, an output switch is triggered. The switch may activate a gate, a warning light or timing system, it may initiate a function in a car wash or cause an overhead door to open and close when a forklift approaches.
Since they are unaffected by dirt and moisture, the sensors perform reliably in demanding outdoor situations. They operate in a wide temperature range from -40° to +70° C (-40° to +158° F) and meet IP67 environmental ratings.
Simple push-button or remote programming allows flexibility for a wide variety of applications. Onboard technology allows the sensors to determine and store ambient background magnetic characteristics in non-volatile memory.
The M-Gage Q7M is conveniently small, measuring 77 mm x 19 mm x 7.5 mm. Its rugged housing is constructed of epoxy encapsulated anodized aluminum with thermoplastic polyester end caps. The M-Gage S18M’s housing is constructed of durable molded ABS/polycarbonate blend with an 18 mm threaded barrel.
